Mendoza,
Palacios, Acedo, Borjas, Páez Pumar & Cía. is
one of the top providers of legal services in Venezuela and has
been so since the last years of the nineteenth century, when our
firm originated.
Initially our firm centered its activities in the traditional
areas of civil and commercial law, rendering services to most
of the foreign banks domiciled in Venezuela. In more recent times,
both in the corporate assistance area and in litigation, we are
specially strong in fields that are rapidly evolving: project
financing, telecommunications, capital markets and securities,
governmental regulations, new products or rules regarding banking
and insurance, foreign investment, environment, competition and
antitrust, consumer law and privatizations.
This diversity is reflected in our clients, which number some
of the largest multinational corporations, as well as Venezuelan
industrial, commercial and financial groups, state-owned corporations
and many non-profit organizations.

Our origin dates back to the year 1896, when Juan Bautista Bance
began a successful legal practice in Caracas, with an impressive
list of clients and a wide network of relationships with the most
recognized firms abroad.
In 1945 the Bance Firm was succeeded by an incorporated partnership
named Mendoza, Palacios, Borjas, Páez Pumar y Compañía
after the names of the active partners of the Bance firm: Carlos
Mendoza, Esteban Palacios and Miguel A. Páez Pumar, jointly
with Arminio Borjas. The firm expanded by integrating some of
the most talented legal counselors in Venezuela, such as Manuel
Acedo Mendoza, Arminio Borjas and Leopoldo Borjas. In 1973 the
firm’s name was changed to Mendoza, Palacios, Acedo,
Borjas, Páez Pumar & Cía., its current
name.
Throughout the history of Mendoza, Palacios, Acedo, Borjas,
Páez Pumar & Cía., some of our lawyers
have held important public and academic positions, such as: President
and Judges of the Supreme Court of Justice, Directors and President
of the Venezuelan Central Bank, President of the Academy of Political
and Social Sciences, Minister of Finance, Vice-minister of Foreign
Affairs, Commissioner of the President of the Republic for Economic
Matters, Minister of Economic Development (Ministro de Fomento),
Vice-presidents of the Supreme Electoral Council and the first
President of the Caracas Stock Exchange. Some have become renowned
university professors in prestigious Venezuelan universities or
have published writings on legal matters, which are in use in
universities and recognized in the Venezuelan juridical forum.
